Akron Zoo closed, Derby events canceled. More affected by air quality Friday

As the air quality continues to be affected by Canadian wildfires in Greater Akron, local events have been canceled and rescheduled and facilities have closed for the day.

Here’s what’s been canceled, closed and adjusted Friday, July 17 amid the hazy conditions in the area.

Is the Akron Zoo closed today?

Yes, the Akron Zoo shared in a Facebook post around 9 a.m. July 17 that it would be closed Friday due to the air quality. Zoo Camp will go on as scheduled as it will be held indoors. As of now, the zoo plans to be open on Saturday, July 18 as the air quality is forecast to improve.

The Wild Market that was scheduled for Saturday has been rescheduled to Saturday, Aug. 15. The zoo said more details on the event will be shared at a later time.

When will the air quality get better?

Conditions are extremely hazardous in Greater Akron.

Smoke from wildfires in Canada have led to hazy conditions. It’s expected to clear starting Friday evening as a warm front moves in.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid outdoor activities.

Akron’s current overall air quality as of 10 a.m. July 17 is at 249, which is in the “very unhealthy” category, according to AirNow.
