Akron police investigating counterfeit $20 bills at Litchfield CLC

Akron Police are investigating how counterfeit money made its way to a public middle school.

The mother of an eighth grade Litchfield Community Learning Center student reported to the police April 23 that her son was handed counterfeit bills at his school by another boy, said APD Lt. Michael Murphy. Her son did not know the name of the other boy.

The mother posted on Facebook that her son was handed multiple $20 counterfeit bills at the school’s running track. She wrote that her son believed the money was real, but she was skeptical. She noticed imperfections and notified police.

APD will continue looking into the matter, Murphy said, adding that an investigation could involve the department’s detectives speaking with the school resource officer and identifying the boy who handed out the bills. APD plans to determine the source of the bills, he said.

Murphy said the situation, which could turn out to be an investigation into “mass duplication” of bills, is not as common as other investigations involving counterfeit money. He said the department will “get fake bills from different stores and restaurants throughout the city from time.”
