This story has been updated with new information and comments from the city of Cincinnati.
The person who died in a crash on Ohio 562 Thursday afternoon was a city of Cincinnati employee, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
“To put it plainly,” said Sheryl Long, Cincinnati city manager, “we are heartbroken.”
The sheriff’s office said units responded to the three-vehicle crash shortly after 12 p.m. July 16, according to a statement. It occurred on westbound Ohio 562, also known as the Norwood Lateral, near its crossroads with Interstate 71.
A city of Cincinnati maintenance pickup truck with an attached trailer was traveling west on the lateral. Three employees were conducting work as part of a scheduled traffic project, the release said.
A Metro bus also traveling west on the lateral then struck the pickup truck and pushed it forward into the trailer.
One of the employees sustained life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital. His identity has not been released pending notification of his family.
The driver of the Metro bus was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment of injuries that are unknown, according to the release.
All westbound lanes are still closed on the lateral as of 4:46 p.m., according to the Ohio Department of Transportation’s live traffic map.
It is unclear how long the lanes will be shut down.
