High school baseball play has largely come to an end on local fields with the Section 1 playoffs concluded and Catholic league play nearly over.
But enough athletes have been nominated to continue the lohud Baseball Player of the Week poll, presented by White Plains Hospital.
Last week, with six athletes nominated, readers gave the honor to Briarcliff catcher Xander D’Onofrio. The junior hit an eighth-inning walk-off home run to beat Pawling in the Section 1 Class B semifinals.
This week coaches have nominated seven players for their May 25-31 contributions, which are noted below.
The poll will close at 3 p.m. Wednesday with the winner announced on lohudsports social media.
Noah Bauer, Mamaroneck
The senior hurler lifted the Tigers to the Section 1 Class AAA championship title with two wins over top-seeded Ketcham. In a AAA semifinal, he hurled a three-hitter in a 5-3 win over Ketcham. Then in the championship game, he went the distance, allowing seven hits and three walks in shutting out Ketcham 2-0. That win also gave coach Mike Chiapparelli his 700th varsity baseball win at Mamaroneck. Between the two games, Bauer’s earned run average was 1.26.
Lucas Goldman, Stepinac
During wins over Molloy, Iona Prep and Xaverian last week, the sophomore outfielder went 7-for-10 with a double, three stolen bases, four runs scored and five runs batted in.
Nick Masciarelli, Mahopac
The senior righty came up huge in forcing a game two of the Section 1 Class AA playoffs against Rye. In the opening game, which Mahopac had to win because it had reached the final from the losers’ bracket, the Div. I Wagner commit totally shut down the top-seeded Garnets in a game cut to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Over those five innings in what became a 12-0 win, Masciarelli allowed just one hit and one walk. And every out Mahopac secured — all 15 — was by a Masciarelli strikeout.
Brandon Schreiber, Leffell
The junior pitcher had an outstanding Section 1 Class C championship playoff series against eventual winner Tuckahoe. In the opener, which Leffell won 5-2, he hurled a complete-game three-hitter, striking out four, walking three and giving up one earned run. In the rubber game, which Tuckahoe won 4-3 in eight innings, he pitched into the eighth, allowing seven hits and four walks and striking out seven. He was tagged with the loss but pitched out of numerous man-on situations to get his team to extras.
Eli Pierce, Putnam Valley
The junior pitcher hurled the Tigers to the Section 1 Class B championship title with two outstanding outings. He pitched a complete-game six-hitter, with one walk, five strikeouts and allowed one earned run in a 7-2 semifinal win over Briarcliff before going 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and allowing four hits and two earned runs in a 5-2 win over Pawling for the title.
Jack Van Sise, Pleasantville
The senior catcher went 4-for-12 last week with a triple and three runs batted in. He threw out four of seven runners who attempted to steal on the Panthers, caught all 29 innings of playoff baseball Pleasantville played last week and managed a pitching staff that gave up only five earned runs over that span.
Logan Verma, Byram Hills
A key part of an absolute marathon championship game, the senior second baseman and pitcher had three hits in the Bobcats’ 16-inning 4-3 Section 1 Class A championship win over Pleasantville. But even more impressive, he earned the win, hurling 8 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out eight.
