Dearborn police launch traffic crackdown with electric Mustangs

Drivers speeding, weaving through traffic or engaging in other dangerous behavior on Dearborn streets may soon find themselves pulled over by a police vehicle they never saw coming.

The Dearborn Police Department on Monday announced the launch of  a new Aggressive Driving Unit featuring three all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E patrol vehicles designed to blend in with traffic while helping officers spot dangerous driving behavior.

Residents got a first look at the new vehicles during Dearborn’s annual Memorial Day Parade.

The Aggressive Driving Unit will focus on aggressive, reckless, careless and distracted driving, along with other hazardous moving violations that contribute to crashes and endanger public safety, the department said in a release.

“I heard and listened to the residents of Dearborn who complained about poor driving behaviors throughout the city,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said in a statement. “The addition of the three Mustang Mach-E vehicles will enable officers to operate in a more discreet manner to identify dangerous traffic violators and enforce traffic laws.”

Traffic safety remains a top concern among Dearborn residents and continues to be a priority for the police department, the release said,

The Aggressive Driving Unit is the latest addition to the city’s traffic safety strategy, which combines enforcement, education and engineering efforts aimed at reducing crashes, improving driver behavior and creating safer streets.

In 2025, Dearborn police officers issued more than 33,000 traffic citations as part of the department’s efforts to reduce dangerous driving and prevent traffic-related injuries and fatalities, the release said.

The department is reminding motorists to obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions behind the wheel, refrain from aggressive driving and share the road responsibly.
