The city of Ithaca is responding to the aftermath of a major water main break on South Aurora Street, which led to a partial roadway collapse, the city said in a post on its Facebook page.
City officials, according to the social media posting, responded to the water main break around 3 p.m. Oct. 18 to a “catastrophic” water main failure occurred between Hudson Street and Prospect Street on South Aurora Street
City crews were immediately dispatched to the site and worked through the evening to locate the break, secure the area, and ensure that nearby residents and businesses continued to have access to water service while the situation was assessed, officials said.
Repair work underway
Officials said city water and sewer crews began making the necessary repairs Oct 20.
The repairs are expected to be completed by Oct. 23, though the roadway surface will need restoration, which will take a few additional days.
The affected block between Hudson Street and Prospect Street will remain closed to through traffic.
Traffic detours
Southbound detour: Drivers traveling south from the Aurora Street Bridge toward Danby Road (Route 96B) should turn left onto Hudson Street, then right onto Prospect Street, and continue left onto South Aurora Street.
Northbound detour: Drivers traveling north on South Aurora Street toward the Aurora Street Bridge should turn right onto Columbia Street, then left onto Hudson Street to reach the bridge.
City working to restore roadway quickly
The city is committed to restoring the roadway as quickly and safely as possible. Crews are working diligently to minimize disruption and maintain essential services during the repair process.
Residents and motorists are asked to plan accordingly and follow posted detours.
