Two people were killed and more than 15 others were injured after a coach bus overturned and triggered a chain-reaction crash on the Long Island Expressway late Monday night in Queens, according to the New York City Police Department.
Chain-reaction crash in Queens
The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. Monday, June 29, near Exit 16 in the Maspeth neighborhood of Queens.
Police said the westbound coach bus first struck a passenger vehicle, causing a chain-reaction crash involving a third vehicle. After the initial collision, the bus crossed the median, overturned into the eastbound lanes and crashed into two additional vehicles.
Bus driver, passenger killed
The 35-year-old bus driver and a male passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The driver of one of the eastbound vehicles was taken to a hospital in critical condition. More than 15 other drivers and passengers were also hospitalized with injuries that were reported as stable or minor.
Investigation continues
The cause of the crash remained under investigation Tuesday morning.
Authorities have not released the identities of the two people who died pending notification of their families.
