A winter weather advisory is in effect for Putnam County on Tuesday, March 3, with potential for a mix of snow, ice and rain to hit the area and affect the commute.
The advisory is for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch are possible, the National Weather Service advisory said.
Drivers should plan for slippery roads.
The Westchester County forecast said rain, possibly mixed with snow, becoming all rain after 3 p.m. The high temperature near 37 degrees, but wind chill values between 25 and 35 degrees. Daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.
Schools in northern Westchester, Putnam adjust for weather
Several school districts in northern Westchester and in Putnam were closed Tuesday due to the forecast and the potential timing of slipper conditions.
Yorktown Central School District said on Facebook that “due to the timing of the anticipated inclement weather conditions forecast for later this morning and afternoon, all Yorktown Schools will be closed today, Tuesday, March 3.” After-school activities were canceled.
Lakeland Central School District, also in Yorktown, said that “due to the anticipated changeover to freezing rain and the potential for icy road conditions later today” its schools were closed.
Others that closed, according to their Facebook pages, included Bedford Central School District, Croton-Harmon schools, Hendrick Hudson School District, Peekskill City School District, Garrison Union Free School District, and Putnam Valley Central School District.
Brewster Central School District went to remote learning Tuesday, its Facebook page said. So did Chappaqua Central School District, which said on Facebook the remote instruction would follow a two-hour delay.
