Leo Shostal of Warwick Valley High School was named the top sophomore boys cross country runner in the state, as selected by the website New York MileSplit.
Shostal won the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association championship at Bear Mountain in 15 minutes, 27.80 seconds, and followed with a win in the Section 9, Class A meet in 15:42. He set a personal best of 15:23.90 over 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) to place seventh at the state Class A meet at Queensbury. he capped the season by placing 17th at the state Federation meet at Bowdoin Park.
Section 9 had two additional first-team selections to the MileSplit team: juniors Jackson St. Lawrence of Goshen and Luke Potter of Cornwall. There were four second-team choices, five third-team choices and two honorable mentions.
The Section 1 schools from Dutchess County had four second-team picks, one third-team pick and two honorable mentions.
MileSplit also named all-state teams by class.
The top-all-state awards went to Claudel Chery of North Rockland (overall); Ben Berman of Bronx Science (senior); Ethan Owen of Burnt Hills (junior); Jackson Majewski of Burnt Hills (freshman); and, Rory Mattimore of Mepham (middle school).
The top all-state awards went to Leyla Bhusri of Shenendehowa (overall); Sloan Wasserman of John Jay-Cross River (senior); Tsadia Bercuvitz of Ithaca (junior); Riley Lynch of Shenendehowa (sophomore); Fiona King of Northport (freshman); and, Amelia Pilon of Marcellus (middle school).
MileSplit named its all-stars through a data-driven process. It is the first year that Milesplit has named all-state teams, ahead of an upcoming all-national team.
