Furman, Pool, Friedman top Mid-Hudson girls cross country state stars

Anna Furman of Tri-Valley High School, Molly Pool of Arlington and Dylan Friedman of New Paltz were first-team choices for the inaugural all-state team, selected by the website New York MileSplit.

The junior Furman won the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association at Bear Mountain with a personal-best 17 minutes, 33.10 seconds over 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). She followed with a win in the Section 9, Class C meet at Warwick’s Sanfordville Elementary in 17:49. She won the state championship at Queensbury in 18:06.90. She placed 20th at the state Federation meet at Bowdoin Park and 26th at the Brooks Northeast meet, also at Bowdoin.

The junior Pool won the Section 1 Northern Counties Championship at Hudson Valley Sportsdome with a personal-best 18:03.80 over 5,000 meters. She placed second at the Section 1, Class A championships at Bowdoin, 25th at states and 41st at the Fed meet.

The senior Friedman won the Mid-Hudson Athletic League meet with a personal-best 18:05.90 over 5,000 meters at the SportsDome, won the Section 9, Class B meet at Sanfordville, placed eight at states at Queensbury and 36th at Feds at Bowdoin.

Section 9 had four second-team choices, seven third-team choices and four honorable mentions.

The Section 1 schools from Dutchess County had one second-team pick and one third-team pick.

MileSplit also named all-state teams by class.

The top all-state awards went to Leyla Bhusri of Shenendehowa (overall); Sloan Wasserman of John Jay-Cross River (senior); Tsadia Bercuvitz of Ithaca (junior); Riley Lynch of Shenendehowa (sophomore); Fiona King of Northport (freshman); and, Amelia Pilon of Marcellus (middle school).
