There is a lot of optimism surrounding the New York Giants these days as they head into their first training camp under new head coach John Harbaugh.
The players are pumped, the fans are fully engaged, the media is buying in, and the franchise’s former great players are looking forward to their team returning to prominence.
In a recent interview, retired Giants All-Pro wide receiver Victor Cruz was asked his thoughts about bringing Harbaugh in to run the team and extending the contract of general manager Joe Schoen.
“I love it, man. I think it was all continuing to bring the pedigree and the character of this football team back to the forefront,’ Cruz said in a video interview with Yahoo! Sports Daily. “And I love (former head coach Brian) Daboll, I love some of the other coaches that we’ve had. They were all good guys, but I think John Harbaugh immediately comes in and brings a certain pedigree and a certain character level to your team that we hadn’t had before, since Coach (Tom) Coughlin, in my opinion.
“As soon as a guy comes in with that winning pedigree, he’s been to the mountaintop, he understands what it takes to win, he knows what it’s like to have a franchise quarterback and how to get them on the right track mentally and get them going.”
Cruz, who holds the Giants’ single-season record for receiving yards and was an integral part of the franchise’s Super Bowl XLVI championship team, expounded on what he’s looking forward to this season under Harbaugh.
“I’ve been in and out of those locker rooms already talking to some guys, and you see his impact already happening,” he said. “The way he goes about his business, the way he conducts his practices, and some of the things he’s doing inside the meeting rooms, you can see that it’s already starting to have an effect. So I’m excited about what he brings to the table. I’m excited about what Jaxson Dart can do in Year 2, and I’m excited for that defense and wreaking havoc across the NFL all season long.”
