Two teens charged in shooting of 17-year-old boy in Liberty

Two teenagers have been charged with the May 30 shooting of a 17-year-old boy in the Village of Liberty.

The suspects, a 15-year-old boy from Monticello and a 16-year-old boy from Liberty, were identified within hours of the shooting, after they were seen fleeing the scene on foot.

Village of Liberty police reported the 17-year-old had been shot in the leg on Edgar Street at approximately 10:15 p.m. May 30.

He was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was most recently reported to be in stable condition.

For the next 60 hours, Liberty police and state police worked around the clock, searching residences associated with the boys, interviewing friends and family members, and using other investigative techniques.

At approximately 1 p.m. on June 2, the boys surrendered themselves to the Liberty Police Department.

Both boys were charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.

They were arraigned in the Youth Part of Sullivan County Court. Sullivan County District Attorney Brian Conaty made applications to have both suspects held in a secure youth detention facility pending further court appearances.

Sullivan County Family Court Judge E. Danielle Jose-Decker granted Conaty’s application on the 16-year-old.

However, Sullivan County Family Court Judge Jacqueline Ricciani released the 15-year-old on his own recognizance, under the supervision of the Sullivan County Probation Department and his legal guardian, pending further court appearances.
