Tops Markets in Big Flats will not reopen after fire. What's next for store employees

The Tops Markets store in Big Flats, significantly damaged by fire in late August, will not reopen.

Kathy Sautter, a Tops spokesperson, said following the severe fire damage sustained this summer at 830 Consumer Square Plaza in Big Flats, Tops Markets has made “the very difficult decision” not to reopen this store as the company’s lease at the site nears its end.

“In the weeks since the fire, we have worked closely with our business partners to ensure the property owner is in the best position possible to offer the space to a new tenant,” the company said in a statement. “Through this process, our focus has remained on doing what is right for the community, even as we face the reality that this store will not reopen.”

Tops said this decision “was not made lightly.”

“We recognize the important role this store has had on the Big Flats community and sincerely appreciate the loyalty and support our customers have shown over the years,” the company said. “The well-being of our associates remains our highest priority with all associates being offered opportunities at neighboring Tops locations, ensuring no job loss.”

Tops added that it remains deeply committed to serving the Southern Tier and encourages its customers to continue shopping at its nearby stores located at 1600 Cedar St. in Elmira and 360 West Pulteney St. in Riverside.

“Redirecting our focus and resources to these nearby locations will allow us to continue delivering the quality, value, and care that our customers expect and deserve,” Tops stated. “We are truly grateful for the continued support of the Big Flats community and thank everyone who has been part of this store’s history.”
