Driver charged after fatal weekend hit-and-run crash in Horseheads

Horseheads police are seeking help from the public with an investigation into a fatal hit-and-run motor vehicle crash over the weekend in the village.

The crash occurred around 10:40 p.m. Sunday, May 24 in the vicinity of Grand Central Avenue and John Street, according to the Horseheads Police Department.

Following an investigation into the incident, police arrested Louis R. Johnson, 34, of Horseheads, and charged him with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, a Class D felony.

Police indicated the incident was a car/pedestrian crash. No information about the victim is being released at this time pending notification of next of kin, according to Police Chief Sean Murray.

Johnson was committed to the Chemung County Jail to await further court proceedings.

The investigation into the crash is continuing. Police are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Horseheads Police Department at 607-739-5669.

The Horseheads Police Department was assisted by the New York State Police, Elmira Heights Police Department, Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, Horseheads Fire Department, Erway Ambulance, and the Village of Horseheads Department of Public Works.
