Storms could disrupt weekend plans across New York. Here's where

Some stormy weather could put a damper on outdoor plans across parts of New York this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, much of western and central New York faces a marginal to slight risk of severe thunderstorms Saturday, June 6, as a cold front moves through the state.

Severe storms possible Saturday

The approaching cold front could trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms across western and central New York on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo. Meteorologist Jon Campbell said the greatest risk for severe weather is in the western Southern Tier.

Forecasters say the strongest storms could produce damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall and large hail.

“The farther north you go, the less of the risk for strong to severe storms,” Campbell said.

Areas under a marginal risk include Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and Watertown.

A slight risk covers much of the Southern Tier, including Jamestown, Ithaca, Elmira, Binghamton and portions of the Catskills.

“It’s very uneven,” Campbell said, noting that isolated storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, though those stronger storms are expected to be the exception rather than the rule.
