It’s the last week of the Section 1 high school wrestling regular season.
This is the last week of dual meets and at the end of the week, Yorktown and Nanuet will compete in the state dual meet championships in Syracuse.
From there, we get ready for sectionals, which are on Feb. 6 (Div. II boys), Feb. 7 & (Div. I boys) and Feb. 8 (Girls and Div. I boys).
Here’s this week’s schedule, with of course nothing on Monday, Jan. 26, as we dig out from the snow.
Yorktown, Nanuet each go 0-2 at state dual meet tournament
Nanuet and Yorktown each went 0-2 in pool play competition at the state dual meet wrestling championships hosted by the New York Public High School Athletic Association on Jan. 31 at SRC Arena and Events Center in Syracuse.
In Div. I competition for large schools, Shenendehowa defeated Yorktown 53-10 in the first round and Middletown beat Yorktown 45-24 in the second round. After three rounds of round-robin pool play, the top four teams advanced to semifinals before the remaining two teams faced in the finals.
Massapequa defeated Shenendehowa 42-21 for the Div. I state title.
In Div. II competition for small schools, Shoreham-Wading River beat Nanuet 55-12 in the first round and Peru defeated Nanuet 52-22. Miller Place defeated Shoreham-Wading River 45-24 for the Div. II state title.
In Yorktown’s duals, Gio Tornambe won a pair of bouts by major decision at 126 pounds. Also picking up wins against Middletown were Luca Lore (110), Rowan Larsen (150), Tyler Caricati (175) and Rocco Lore (215).
In Nanuet’s duals, Brian Lennon won two bouts by pinfall at 285 pounds. Also winning bouts against Shoreham-Wading River were Jesse Rizzo (190) and Colin Sampilo (118). Also picking up wins against Peru were Mason Sampilo (103), Jack Gallagher (110) and Thomas Rodriguez (175).
Seeds will be determined Feb. 2 for the Section 1 Wrestling Championships, which will all be held this weekend at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. The Div. II tournament will be held Feb. 6 and the Div. I tournament will be held Feb. 7-8. The Section 1 girls freestyle wrestling tournament will be held Feb. 8.
