Nets' Jordi Fernandez reacts to signing contract extension

Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez came to the Nets two years ago for his first head-coaching job with the goal of turning around a franchise that is itching for more playoff success. Brooklyn made sure that Fernandez and his coaching staff would be around for the next few years and Fernandez gave his reaction to being extended with the Nets.

“I think trust, support and belief, right? I think my experience here, I couldn’t ask for anything better. From ownership and management and the group that we work with and getting rewarded with the extension means the world to me and my family, but also to the coaches,” Fernandez said on Thursday, per Erik Slater of ClutchPoints. Fernandez and his coaching staff were extended despite the Nets coming off a 20-62 record in the 2025-26 season.

“Now, it’s our time to keep working hard and take those next steps, right? What it means, the process for us, which we’re all very happy and we all believe what [the] steps of improvement are,” Fernandez continued. “But, obviously it’s very different when somebody says, we support you, but also when they do it with an action like this. How much it means for us, and how appreciative, not just me, but the coaching staff. That almost gets us more excited to work this summer.”

Fernandez and his coaching staff, which features people like former NBA All-Star and Michigan Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard and former Portland Trail Blazers assistant Steve Hetzel, have been mainly focused on player development over the past two seasons. Brooklyn selected five players in the 2025 NBA Draft, all in the first round, so Fernandez and the coaching staff will have their work cut out for them this summer and next season.

Fernandez made an appearance at P.S. 1 in Brooklyn on Thursday as he hosted a celebration of the Catalonian holiday, Sant Jordi Day, for over 100 third-graders. Fernandez, born in Badalona, Spain, began his coaching career in the United States in 2006 during his time with Impact Basketball Academy, but he has been coaching since he was 15 years old while still in Spain. Now, Fernandez gets to continue what he started with the Nets not too long ago.
