The 2026 outdoor track and field season was a highly successful one for many athletes but also marred by injuries that no doubt changed the outcome of many events at local meets and, for that matter, also at the state championships and possibly nationals.
Among those going down were Ursuline’s versatile UNC-Chapel Hill commit Jane Hickey, who missed every meet from the Loucks Games and Westchester County championship through Section 1 championships, the state championship and nationals.
Even Sloan Wasserman, The 2026 Westchester/Putnam Girls Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year, wrapped up her final year of running for John Jay-Cross River slightly injured at nationals.
Still, Wasserman had a magical last year with the Wolves, excelling in cross-country, indoor track and, finally, outdoor track, where she won state titles in two events after taking home gold from states in the winter and also winning a state cross-country title in the fall — that one by setting a course record.
Below, see a recap of her spring and a list of all the Westchester/Putnam all-stars by event.
Sloan Wasserman
Westchester/Putnam Girls Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year
School: John Jay-Cross River
Year: Senior
Highlights: Wasserman closed out her high school career in near storybook fashion. She’ll carry a high school resume with her to Div. I Boston College that virtually any track athlete would love to have. Wasserman won the Westchester County girls 1,500-meter title and had the second fastest time among girls in Westchester/Putnam at that distance. But it was at longer distances that she really excelled. Repeating her indoor performance, she won both the state public and state Federation (all schools) girls 3,000-meter title. Her 9:28.99 time was only bested all-time in Section 1 by the biggest female names ever in local track, Katelyn Tuohy and Mary Cain. But that was only part of her story. Despite an injury, Wasserman clocked the second fastest 2,000-meter steeplechase time among high school girls in the country this spring, taking second at New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 6:34.3. That was No. 15 all-time in the country. This came after she won the state public and Federation titles in the event and had repeated as girls steeplechase champion at the prestigious Loucks Games. Wasserman, who once thought soccer was her long-term sport, has morphed into one of the nation’s finest female track athletes.
