The Soul Rebels will kick the New Orleans connection into high gear Monday night at the Rochester International Jazz Festival.
The acclaimed brass band takes the Kodak Hall stage at 9:30 p.m. today, following a 7 p.m. performance by The Headhunters, the legendary jazz-funk group that grew out of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking 1970s recordings. (While not a New Orleans band, the current Headhunters lineup includes acclaimed New Orleans saxophonist and Big Chief Donald Harrison.)
The Soul Rebels have become one of New Orleans’ well-known musical ambassadors, blending the city’s brass band traditions with funk, soul, hip-hop and contemporary influences. Founded by musicians who came up in New Orleans brass band culture, the group represents both the deep roots and continuing evolution of the city’s music scene.
For festivalgoers interested in one of this year’s strongest New Orleans connections, Monday night offers an opportunity to hear a group that has helped redefine what a modern brass band can sound like.
