A three-alarm fire has caused significant damage to the Knights Inn in Endwell and displaced approximately 73 people.
As of 10 a.m. on June 22, more than a dozen local agencies were continuing to work at the scene of a fire in Endwell that burned through the roof of the Knights Inn.
The inn, located on 2603 E Main St., has sustained significant damage that could be seen from the exterior of the building. The flames were contained by 9:45 a.m., but smoke was still visible from outside.
The motel has been used as emergency housing by the Broome County Department of Social Services to shelter unhoused people. A volunteer with the Red Cross said the organization’s current estimate is that 37 households have been displaced with a total of 73 people.
Vestal United Methodist Church at 328 Main St. is now open for those who have been displaced and need shelter.
Fire officials have not disclosed details on the extent of the damage or any injuries.
Over 10 agencies responded to the fire, including the Endwell Fire Department, Endwell EMS, Broome County EMS, New York State Police, the Union Center Fire Company, Union Volunteer EMS, the West Corners Fire Department, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, the Vestal Fire Department, Endicott EMS, the Prospect Terrace Fire Department, the Endicott Fire Department, New York State Department of Transportation and NYSEG.
Members of the Red Cross were at the scene handing out food, water and ponchos.
A portion of East Main Street remained closed to traffic as of 10 a.m., starting near Scarborough Drive and continuing past the motel.
Volunteers are currently accepting donations for people who were displaced by the fire at a tent in front of Tony’s Restaurant at 2304 E Main Street, according to a Facebook post from Broome County food distribution organization CHOW.
