Albertus Magnus continues strong season with win over Ursuline

BARDONIA ― The thought coming into the 2026 season from the outside looking in was Albertus Magnus was going to be a young team and after the crop of seniors that graduated, that this might be a down year for the Falcons.

Don’t tell them that.

The Falcons picked up a signature win as the postseason draws near, defeating visiting Ursuline 8-5 on Tuesday, May 12. The victory improved Albertus Magnus to 10-6, a week after it defeated Eastchester.

“I told the girls we had to play tight defense for the rest of the year,” Albertus Magnus coach Anthony Falciglia said. “Do all the things we need to do to win. Eastchester was a top rated team, we beat them. Tappan Zee, we beat them early on. We said Ursuline is going to be no different. We took the lead early and held on. Piper Johnson had 10 strikeouts. We had a couple of big home runs. Those are big things that contributed to the win.”

After Ursuline took an early lead, the Falcons came right back in the bottom of the first with an RBI by Maddie Collado to tie the game at 1-1. Three batters later, Maeve Reynolds reached base via an error and two more runs to give the Falcons the lead.

“I think we came hard and beat them from the jump,” Falcons catcher Rylee Kinchen said. “Our plate approaches were good and we were swinging at the strikes.”

Both teams’ offenses were showing out in the game with each team having nine hits. This included three home runs, two by Albertus Magnus and one by Ursuline.

Collado had the second home run of the game for Albertus Magnus in the fifth inning that gave the Falcons some breathing room. They were up 5-3 when Collado hit a home run to center field, which was nearly caught by Ursuline’s Ava Papaleo in center field.

Collado learned a little bit from her previous at bat where she struck out.

“I came in, I had two strikes on me,” Collado said. “I knew she was going throw it right down the middle and I came with it. I got my hips through and hit it out of the park.”

With one more week to go before the postseason, the young Falcons hope to build off of this with a tough week facing Harrison, Pearl River and Haldane.

“I think every win we can get, we can build off of,” Collado said. “Our mindset will be way stronger and we can continue to build off of the wins.”

Ursuline (14-4) got an early lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by AJ Capano. She then came back in the top of the third inning with a two-run home run to cut the lead 5-3.

Co-players of the game

Rylee Kinchen, Maddie Collado, Albertus Magnus: This game turned into a bit of slug fest and the two freshmen powered the Falcons win from the jump. They went a combined 3 for 6 with four runs scored, two walks, 2 HR and four RBI for the game to help anchor the offense. The team had nine hits in the game.

Quotables

“We built off of the win really well and it helped us get the momentum to keep going. I think we’ll be able to keep the momentum going through the whole week,” Falcons pitcher Piper Johnson on how they were able to build off of the Eastchester win and continue.

“We’re trying to prove everyone wrong by showing that being a young team doesn’t matter you can still win. Even with the good players that left, we can still win without them.”
