Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds possible in New York. See timing

Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across western and north-central New York on Tuesday, with some storms capable of becoming severe, according to the National Weather Service.

The greatest threat is expected from late Tuesday morning through the evening.

Damaging winds are the primary threat

Forecasters say the strongest storms could produce isolated damaging wind gusts capable of bringing down trees and power lines.

If thunderstorms organize into a line, a longer corridor of wind damage is possible.

The National Weather Service also said there is a low risk of isolated tornadoes and large hail.

Heavy rain could cause localized flooding

Some thunderstorms may produce torrential downpours that could lead to localized flash flooding, particularly in poor-drainage areas.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to seek shelter if severe weather develops.
