FIRST ROUND

Pleasantville picks up the pace, sends Bronxville home

PLEASANTVILLE – Knowing a dramatic growth spurt was unlikely, Nicky Bonura preached the importance of pushing the pace all week.

And the game plan was executed to perfection.

Pleasantville was fast and furious right from the start, rewarding its first-year coach with a 58-43 win over Bronxville on Friday in a Section 1 Class A opening-round game. It was the first playoff win for the undersized Panthers since 2023.

The relative ease of the postseason win was a surprise.

“We had to come out with energy,” said Pleasantville senior Declan Bruder, who reached 1,000 career points with a third-quarter free throw. “They’re a bigger team than us and nobody expected us to win this game. I knew we came in with the No. 7 seed, but everyone sees us as a football and lacrosse town.

“Right now, it’s a basketball town and that’s what we want.”

A little extra attitude went a long way as the Panthers stomped on the gas and went on a 16-2 run to build a comfortable lead with a minute to go in the first. It was a statement. The Broncos committed six untimely turnovers and missed six contested layups during the run.

Momentum got away from Pleasantville during a three-game slide in final weeks of the regular season, but the experience is now viewed as beneficial.

“The losses we had, they made us a better team,” Panthers senior Nate Barreto said. “We just want to stay consistent. The coaches have been on us and are putting us in a position to win. We’ve lost in the first round each of the past two years and didn’t want that anymore. It was time for us to change the narrative.”

Turning point

The Broncos did not go quietly and closed to within 18-14 on a Cole Lewis layup early in the second quarter, but a corner 3 from Bruder ignited a second 16-2 run and left Bronxville in a 34-16 hole with 90 seconds to play in the half.

Box score

No. 10 Bronxville (10-11): Cole Lewis 5P; Danny Alma 4P; Theo Hoffner 9P; Brady Dolan 5P; Niko Kedas2P; Quinn Hershberg 6P; Desi Heathwood 9P; Walker Moore 2P.

No. 7 Pleasantville (13-8): Connor Day 3P; Eamon O’Connell 2P; Declan Bruder 26P; Zach Lefkowitz 8P, 5A; Nate Barreto 15P, 3A; Liam Sanborn 4P, 5R.

Takeaways

Bruder is a more versatile scorer than he was a season ago. He’s not had to shoulder as much of the load in recent weeks. Barretto has become a reliable second option for the Panthers and there’s a committee behind them that are collectively dropping 12-18 points a game.

Bonura will be facing another first-year varsity coach when Pleasantville heads to Byram Hills on Tuesday for a quarterfinal game. An introduction will not be necessary. He and Bobcats coach James Morales were high school and college teammates and Fox Lane and Cortland.
