The rollover wreck of a car carrying four teenage boys claimed the life of a 15-year-old, the Iowa State Patrol reports.
A state patrol crash reports said the single-car crash occurred at 2:33 a.m. Saturday, May 9, in rural Cherokee County when a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2 with a 16-year-old at the wheel lost control, entered a ditch, rolled over and hit a utility pole, then caught fire.
The 15-year-old who died at the scene was in the rear seat and was not wearing a seat belt, the report said. Another boy in the rear seat, age 16, who also was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and suffered serious injuries, the report said. He was taken to a hospital via helicopter.
The driver and the front-seat passenger, 14, were both wearing seatbelts and were treated for minor injuries, the report said.
The accident occurred as the Pontiac was westbound on Highway C66 just west of J Avenue. The report said it was not clear why the vehicle lost control.
The report did not identify the boys and did not say whether charges were filed.
