The New Orleans Saints reached into their bag of tricks on Sunday. It didn’t go well.
On third-and-goal from the 6-yard line with 1:31 left in the second quarter, the Saints attempted a Philly Special against the Buffalo Bills. Quarterback Spencer Rattler handed the ball to running back Kendre Miller, who flipped it back to wide receiver Chris Olave.
Olave, looking for Rattler in the right flat, never set his feet. His pass floated behind the quarterback, and into the hands of Bills rookie safety Cole Bishop.
Bishop, leaping across the goal line, snagged the ball with one hand for his first career interception, ending New Orleans’ chance yet to grab the lead.
Instead of pulling ahead, the Saints went into halftime still trailing the Bills.
The Philly Special gadget play was made famous by the Philadelphia Eagles in their Super Bowl LII win when wide receiver Trey Burton threw a touchdown pass to quarterback Nick Foles.
