New York Giants sign former Vikings draft pick to practice squad

One day after firing head coach Brian Daboll, the New York Giants were back at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center and making adjustments to their practice squad.

With scouts and coaches watching closely, the Giants hosted several players for private workouts, including linebacker Trace Ford, who was with the team during training camp.

Also on hand for the workouts were safeties Micah Abernathy and Tysheem Johnson, and cornerback Myles Purchase.

Johnson and Purchase both went undrafted in April, while the well-traveled Abernathy has 20 games of experience under his belt.

None of those players were immediately signed, but the Giants did make two additions to their practice squad.

The team confirmed the signing of rookie kicker Ben Sauls, which had been reported earlier in the day, and also announced the addition of tight end Zach Davidson.

The 27-year-old Davidson was a fifth-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2021 NFL draft. He spent his rookie season in purple before signing with the Buffalo Bills in 2022, which is where he remained over the past three seasons.

In two career games, the 6-foot-7, 251-pound Davidson has recorded just a single reception for five yards.
