A New Hartford dentist was arrested on May 13 for allegedly prescribing narcotics to patients that were not actively receiving treatment, according to a statement from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
Lawrence B. Marks, 76, was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance by a practitioner and one count of first-degree falsifying business records after a joint law enforcement investigation, the office said.
Marks, who both lived and maintained his dental practice at One Oxford Road in New Hartford, had been the subject of a New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement investigation that began in January.
He was suspected of prescribing and over-prescribing narcotics to patients who were not actively receiving treatment at the time the prescriptions were written.
The Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement gathered information in their investigation and, in April of 2026, joined with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the sheriff’s office to assist in furthering the case, officials said.
On May 13, investigators from the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, Drug Enforcement Administration, and investigators from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office went to Marks’ practice and gathered further information.
Marks was subsequently arrested and transported to the sheriff’s office.
After his arrest was processed, Marks was held at the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office pending an arraignment in Centralized Arraignment Part (CAP) Court, the sheriff’s office said.
