A Rochester man has been charged with second-degree murder after police say he fatally stabbed a bar employee during an altercation outside a downtown establishment early Saturday morning.
Fatal stabbing on St. Paul Street
Officers responded around 3:30 a.m. June 20 to 187 St. Paul St. for a report of a stabbing, according to the Rochester Police Department.
When officers arrived, they encountered a large crowd exiting the The Mafia Hub bar and found several people attempting to provide first aid to a 33-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The victim, identified by police as Kameron Nelson, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Suspect arrested
Investigators determined that a 23-year-old man became involved in an argument with his girlfriend inside the bar. Police said the dispute continued outside and escalated into a physical altercation.
Nelson, who worked as a cook at the bar, saw the incident and attempted to assist the woman, according to police. Investigators allege the suspect then stabbed Nelson multiple times.
Police later identified the suspect as Alexavier Colon, 23.
Members of the Rochester Police Department’s SWAT Team and Tactical Unit executed a search warrant Saturday afternoon at an apartment on West Main Street and took Colon into custody.
He has been charged with second-degree murder and is awaiting arraignment.
Prior conviction
Police said Colon previously was arrested in connection with a 2021 shooting on Sullivan Street. He later pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and was sentenced in 2023 to three years in prison followed by post-release supervision.
According to police, Colon was released from prison last month and was wearing a GPS ankle monitor at the time of his arrest.
Investigation continues
Although an arrest has been made, homicide detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information or video related to the incident to contact police.
