Man killed in upstate NY crash after vehicle leaves roadway, hits guardrail

A 78-year-old man was killed in a one-vehicle crash over Memorial Day weekend in the town of Hamilton, Madison County.

According to New York State Police, William L. Kilts, 78, of West Edmeston, was driving alone in a sport utility vehicle on State Route 12 shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, May 23.

Troopers said Kilts was driving erratically before the SUV left the roadway and struck a guardrail near Albro Road.

Kilts was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Investigation ongoing

State police said an autopsy is scheduled as investigators work to determine whether a medical event contributed to the crash.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office and the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office are assisting in the investigation.
