A 67-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot inside her apartment Wednesday afternoon in Canandaigua, according to police.
Officers responded to a multifamily residence on Center Street at about 2:51 p.m. June 24 for a report of a person who had been shot. When officers arrived, they found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.
Suspect arrested after vehicle and foot chase
Witnesses provided police with a description of the suspect and vehicle seen leaving the area, authorities said.
A short time later, an Ontario County sheriff’s deputy located the vehicle entering the town of Geneva on Routes 5 and 20. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled, leading law enforcement on a pursuit into the city of Geneva.
Police said the vehicle eventually crashed into a utility pole and a parked vehicle on Milton Street. The suspect then fled on foot before being apprehended a short distance away.
Investigators recovered a loaded handgun from the vehicle.
Elmira man charged
Spencer D. Wayne, 50, of Elmira, was arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault.
He was transported to the Ontario County Jail pending arraignment.
Investigation ongoing
The victim was treated at the scene by the Canandaigua Emergency Squad and Canandaigua Fire Department before being flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital.
Police said she remains in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are possible.
