Kanakadea Park closed for rest of week due to flooding, safety concerns at Almond Dam

Kanakadea Park will be closed to the public for the remainder of this week and throughout the weekend due to flooding, the Steuben County Department of Public Works announced Wednesday.

Located along the Almond Dam between the City of Hornell and Almond, the park has been heavily impacted by this week’s heavy rains, which have left significant debris strewn across the grounds.

Steuben County DPW Commissioner Eric Rose said that safety concerns prompted the temporary closure, as high-water levels and debris have created hazardous conditions throughout the park.

“We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure the park is safe for all visitors,” said Commissioner Rose.

The DPW is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as conditions improve, the county said.

The bridge near the Almond Dam on state Route 21, between Hornell and Almond, was closed to traffic Wednesday due to flooding. Route 21 was blocked at Webbs Crossing. Water is covering the beams and supports of the bridge, preventing inspection by DOT.

Heavy rain affected southwestern Steuben County and eastern Allegany County this week, washing out small streams, creeks and roadside ditches, pushing debris out into roadways and causing road damage across the area. Several roads were temporarily closed to allow water to recede and facilitate repairs.

Some of the highest water levels were recorded at the Canisteo River in West Cameron (13.03 feet at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday and Canaseraga Creek above Dansville (8.67 feet at 11:15 p.m. Monday).
