An incarcerated man died after an altercation with another incarcerated individual at Collins Correctional Facility, according to New York State Police.
State police said the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) notified the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at about 11 p.m. July 21 of the incident.
Victim died after being taken to hospital
The preliminary investigation found that one incarcerated individual assaulted another in a Residential Rehabilitation Unit (RRU), causing serious physical injuries.
The victim was transported to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts.
Authorities identified the victim as Jose R. Aponte, 34.
Investigation ongoing
The DOCCS Office of Special Investigations is assisting with the investigation. The New York State Attorney General’s Office was notified and responded to the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
