The West Endicott Park carousel may not be open for the rest of the summer due to construction.
Located at 525 Maple St. in Endicott, the West Endicott Park carousel is one of six within Broome County, and one of three currently under repair.
On July 22, Town of Union Deputy Commissioner of Public Works Sarah White explained the carousel was closed in May, as it was deemed “unsafe to operate,” prompting the construction project.
The Town of Union Parks and Recreation Department subsequently hired a Connecticut-based company to work on the carousel due to it being “specialty and historic,” White said.
The company, with the help of local companies, dismantled the entire carousel and transported some of its mechanics back to Connecticut to determine why the carousel was not working properly. Work is currently being done on the electrical aspects of the mechanics along with basic functions of the horses as they move.
White explained that while the work is close to being finished, there is still no reopening date for the carousel.
“I am hopeful that we may be able to open the carousel for the last few weeks of summer; however, I cannot confirm that at this time,” White said. “A project of this size takes time, as we want to ensure every part of the carousel is thoroughly inspected and addressed.”
As the project progresses, additional information and a potential reopening date will be announced on the Town of Union Parks and Recreation Facebook page along with the website.
The West Endicott Park carousel is one of three currently under repair. The CFJ Park carousel and the Ross Park carousel are also closed.
