Clear your vehicles before hitting the highway, New York State Police reminded motorists.
Troopers emphasized the importance of brushing snow and ice off vehicles after a mid-afternoon incident on Interstate 81 in Cortland County on Jan. 30.

A slab of ice flew off a northbound tractor-trailer in Homer, Cortland County, and struck a northbound pickup traveling behind it around 12:35 p.m. according to State Police. T
he ice shattered the pickup’s windshield on the driver’s side, and struck the driver, a 23-year-old man from Oneida County.
The tractor-trailer driver did not stop, troopers said.
The pickup driver suffered injuries to his face and hands and was treated at the scene, according to State Police.
“Snow and ice left on the roof or hood can blow off at highway speeds and become extremely dangerous,” troopers said.
