We’ve got a pair of high-intensity forver rivalry games on the schedule this week.
Yorktown and Somers will be resuming a neighborhood rivalry that was put into a timeout for two seasons when things began to get too personal on the field and in the stands on both sides of the field. Stepinac and Iona Prep are getting together for a CHSAA matchup that always delivers extra heat.

We’ll have complete game coverage of both games.

Iglesias sparks a Somers comeback against Yorktown
LINCOLNDALE – Somers is right back in business.
Getting the newcomers settled took a couple of weeks, but the defending state champions demonstrated they are once again in contention Tuesday with a surprise 9-8 win over Yorktown.
Tristan Iglesias scored five goals and scripted a dramatic fourth-quarter rally.
“We had a slow start to the year so it was good to get a big win in a rivalry game that brought a lot of energy to our team,” the junior attackman said. “We haven’t played them in a couple of years, so we got a big crowd and it’s great to feel a good win.”
Play was essentially suspended for two years when the rivalry became a bit unneighborly. The programs are no longer in the same classification, so there were no playoff meetings, either.
It was the Huskers’ first time on the field since upsetting Darien (Connecticut). The intensity was solid, but the level of execution dipped considerably.
Regrets were beginning to pile up for the Tuskers, as well. Turnovers were an issue for three quarters, but the defense hounded Yorktown and in the last eight minutes of play, Somers was dialed in.
“We have a lot of new guys back there,” senior defender Bret Kennedy said of the poles. “The biggest thing right now is the fact that we’re all connected. We’re on the same page. I think we have the potential to be so much better, too.”
Iglesias got Somers within a goal, 7-6, with 6:12 remining and Cam Violante came downhill in a hurry to knot the score a minute later. Iglesias gave the Tuskers the lead with 4:12 to play and Liam Barrett applied the exclamation point, extending the lead to 9-7 with a pole goal on a heads-up restart.
Box score
Yorktown (3-2): Frank Ofrias 3G; J.T. Carney 1G; Tommy Carney 1G, 2A; Brady Sheridan 1G, 1A; Gianluca Marchini 2G; Hunter Mezzatesta 10S; Tyler Caricati 13/21FO.
Somers (4-2): Cam Violante 3G, 1A; Tristan Iglesias 5G, 1A; Liam Barrett 1G; Xander DiPasquale 1A; Kieran Picco 1A; Bret Kennedy 13GB.
Takeaways
Somers has moved on from last season’s NYSPHSAA Class C championship, but every opponent remains focused on what this team did a year ago. The newcomers in the lineup appear to be more comfortable than they were in the opener at Rye.
“We really don’t mention last year at this point,” Tuskers coach Jordan Hirsch said. “We brought some guys back from that team but we lost a ton. We talk more about the process for this group and what things need to look like each step of the way.”
Iglesias and Violante are bigger and stronger. When they come around screens and get downhill with a step on the defender, help better come quickly.
Yorktown wasn’t as disciplined with the ball as it was against Darien and several possessions were short-circuited by turnovers early in the clock, but Ofrias netted three goals and seems to be emerging. He’s because an opportunistic finisher.
