The New York State Department of Transportation has been working on a rehabilitation project along I-590 in Brighton since earlier this year.
The project will replace two I-590 bridges, over State Route 31, and rehabilitate bridges over Allens Creek Road in Brighton. Other features will include:
According to the DOT, the project will cost over $51 million that will be funded through state and federal grants.
During the projects’ development stages, residents were invited to a public open house to give input on the projects designs. Some are looking forward to the improvements, while others are concerned about road conditions and daily traffic changes.
Brighton residents comment on local traffic changes
Employee of the Sunoco on the corner of Monroe Avenue and Allens Creek Road, Steven Snyder-Smith has seen changes in road conditions and driver habits.
“ I’ve definitely noticed there’s been a big change in how people are driving and how they’re behaving on the road,” Snyder-Smith said. “ The road conditions themselves have just worsened, I’d say, but that’s typical for construction projects.”
Snyder-Smith has also heard complaints of current road conditions from customers who frequent the local gas station.
The Client Services Team at Pittsford Animal Hospital were not informed of the project beforehand, finding out from local news sources. “We have had many complaints about how the closing of Exit 2B is adding tons of backup and time to their commute to us, in an already super busy road and exit.” said staff representatives in a statement.
The team at the local animal hospital says they have not seen major changes in their commute time; however, they often remind clients of traffic changes and exit closings.
“There was a few snags, but even before the bridge was being done, there was a few snags,” said Ted Marello, an employee at Valero on Monroe Avenue, near Pittsford Plaza.
Marello hopes the project will improve appearances and traffic in the area.
“I’m used to this road being very busy most of the time, with or without construction,” Marello said.
Drivers can expect closures during the week day and some overnight closures throughout the construction season.
In Brighton, the NY 31 west entrance ramp on I-590 and the I-590 south exit ramp, near Exit 2B on Monroe Avenue, will be on a continuous closure daily from 5 a.m. until noon. Drivers can expect the ramps to reopen on November 30, 2026, according to the DOT’s website.
The project is expected to be complete by December 2028.
