Detroit — The season is over for shortstop Trey Sweeney. More accurately, it never began.
Sweeney, 26, acquired by the Tigers from the Dodgers in 2024 in the Jack Flaherty trade, has tried to rehab his way back from a shoulder injury since before spring training. Finally, earlier this week, he underwent surgery.
The Tigers are calling it a right shoulder arthroscopy.
“After trying conservatively to get through this shoulder issue, surgery ended up being the only option,” manager AJ Hinch said.
Sweeney was the Tigers regular shortstop down the stretch in 2024 and played in the postseason in each of the last two years. In 154 games, he slashed .202/.261/.313 with 10 home runs.
