The Hudson Valley Renegades, a Class A minor league baseball team of the New York Yankees, secured two spots on the South Atlantic League postseason all-star team.
Kyle Carr, 23, was named the pitcher of the year. The lefty led the league with a 1.96 ERA, the lowest by a Renegade pitcher in the high-Class A era (since 2021). Carr posted an 8-6 record in 22 starts, throwing 119.1 innings (ranked fourth in league), allowing 81 hits, 35 runs (36 earned) and 47 walks while recording 104 strikeouts (ranked ninth). His eight wins ranked No. 2 in the SAL. The .190 opposing batting average led the circuit.
His best outing was a July 2 start against the Brooklyn Cyclones, tossing a seven-inning, complete-game shutout of the Mets affiliate, the first by a Hudson Valley pitcher since 2009. That was part of a run from June-August run when he posted a 0.98 ERA, the second-best in minor-league baseball.
“I can’t say enough about Kyle and the growth he showed this season,” said Demetre Kokoris, the Renegades pitching coach. “He embraced every challenge, competed with intent, and found ways to adapt and improve with each outing. His commitment to learning and evolving as a pitcher was matched every bit of this recognition, and it was a privilege to watch his development unfold.”
Carr was promoted to the Class AA Somerset Patriots in September. He made three starts there, posting an 0-1 mark, 8.56 ERA, allowing 13 earned runs over 13.2 innings, walking eight and fanning 13.
Carr re-wrote the Renegades record books with 46 career starts, 223.1 innings and 199 strikeouts.
Carr was a third-round draft pick out of Palomar College in 2023, selected No. 97 overall. He was born in La Jolla, Calif.
It is the third year in a row a Renegades hurler was named the SAL’s top pitcher: Drew Thorpe won in 2023 and Cam Schlitter in 2024.
Relief pitcher Hueston Morrill was named to the SAL all-star team. In 33 outings, Morrill was 4-1 with six saves and a 0.42 ERA, allowing only two earned runs across 43.1 innings. He went 25 games without allowing an earned run from April 27-Aug. 16. He had seven outings with two-or-more innings and held opponents to a .110 average.
Morrill was a non-drafted free agent in 2022 out of Oklahoma State. He set the Renegades record with 69 career outings, though that mark was later broken by Matt Keating.
“Huey is the model of consistency. Whether it was practice or competition, his standards never wavered,” Kokoris said.
Morrill made one appearance with Somerset in August, allowing one earned run in 1.1 innings, fanning two.
The other Renegades named to as SAL all-stars are Schlittler and pitcher Trent Sellers in 2024; Thorpe and Jack Neely in 2023; and Tyler Hardman in 2022.
