How much will Breece Hall's contract extension with the Jets cost?

The New York Jets placed the franchise tag on running back Breece Hall earlier this offseason. It’s currently scheduled to pay Hall a fully-guaranteed $14.2 million in 2026. That salary would make Hall the fifth-highest paid running back in the NFL on a per annual average basis.

Recent reports indicate the Jets will begin discussing a contract extension with Hall once the 2026 NFL draft concludes. That makes sense. Using the franchise tag on Hall was simply a placeholder to extend the deadline to discuss an extension with him until July 15. It would benefit all parties involved to sign a multi-year contract.

Hall would get additional financial security beyond 2026. The Jets would better manage his cap charges via an extension as well. Jets fans should definitely expect Hall to sign a multi-year contract extension this offseason. How much it will cost general manager Darren Mougey is a different question and expectation altogether.

Hall may target the three-year, $43 million contract Kenneth Walker III signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Walker is slated to earn $14.3 million per year, slightly more than the franchise tag amount for Hall. It’s worth noting he was named Super Bowl 60 MVP, however, and entered offseason contract talks as a free agent with maximum leverage.

The Jets and Hall could meet halfway. Perhaps Hall agrees to a three-year extension worth $40.5 million. That would pay him $13.5 million annually, slightly less than the franchise tag, but would also provide him with financial security beyond a one-year franchise tag deal.

The Jets should aim for a multi-year contract that pays under $14 million annually.
