“The hottest temperatures are likely to occur on Monday,” Murphy said. “Sunday starts to heat up, and we’ll see temperatures in the low 90s, but heat indices in the afternoon will approach 100.””

“Monday will start in the mid-90s, and the peak heat index in the Mohawk Valley will be around 100 to 105. And the heat continues on Tuesday with a heat index of 100. That’s three solid days of hot temperature.”

The potential heatwave also will include high humidity, with a dew point of around 75%.

Gov. Hochul, meteorologist issues heat warnings, tips

Gov. Kathy Hochul has issued a warning on the extreme heat and encouraged voters looking to cast their ballot during the early voting period ending June 22 to avoid waiting in line during a heatwave.

“The number one cause of weather-related death is extreme heat, but preparation, communication and other precautions can save lives,” Hochul said. “That is why we are deploying a whole of government approach to keep New Yorkers safe, working to protect our most vulnerable populations, and encouraging voters to take advantage of early voting ahead of the June 24 Primary Election Day.”

Voters in New York City, Albany, Syracuse, and elsewhere can expect high temperatures dur the primaries on Tuesday June 24. To beat the heat, take advantage of early voting or request an early mail ballot in person at your local county board of elections office.

Murphy encouraged people to find ways to keep cool and avoid staying outside for too long. Those that do need to be outside should seek shade and take frequent breaks while drinking plenty of water.

Extreme heat is dangerous and is the leading cause of weather-related fatalities in the United States. The most common heat-related illnesses are heat stroke (sun stroke), heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rash.
