During former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher’s final season at the helm, the Aggies landed what is now considered the most underrated prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, as three-star linebacker Taurean York chose A&M over Duke, where he would have played under current coach Mike Elko during his final season leading the Blue Devils.
One of the smartest players on the 2023 roster, York’s instincts and advanced tackling earned the Temple (TX) native a starting spot during his freshman season, which he kept for the next two years under Elko. While slightly undersized at 5’11”, York’s NFL-level strength was never an issue, which was on full display during the NFL combine after cranking out 25 reps of 225 on the bench press.
Appearing in 39 games, York recorded 229 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, an interception, and 7 pass deflections. Combined with his lack of size, York was not considered one of the more athletic linebackers in the 2026 NFL Draft; his production couldn’t be ignored, but after going undrafted, the Denver Broncos gave the three-year starter his first opportunity to prove his doubters wrong.
On Friday, Denver’s first preseason camp provided York is first on-field action outside of the Broncos’ training camp scrimmages, facing Atlanta on the road. Late in the third quarter, Denver held a 24-0 lead; the former Aggie defender made an immediate impact, making his way into the backfield for a tackle for loss and finishing with two tackles on the night.
I’m not saying York is a lock to make the 53-man roster with the 2026 NFL season just four weeks away, but if he doesn’t make the team, I have a good feeling he’ll end up on another team’s roster before the season.
