The world No. 1 woke up during Round 2 of the 2026 St. Jude Championship. Now the rest of the FedEx Cup playoff field gets to play a familiar game: Can anyone catch Scottie Scheffler?
The four-time PGA Tour Player of the Year tied the course record with his 9-under round of 61, vaulting him into the lead at 11 under. He’s got a three-stroke lead over Sungjae Im and Viktor Hovland, as well as a four-stroke lead over Ludvig Åberg entering play today.
Im has put himself in great position to rise from the playoff bubble and into firm position to make the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings and qualify for next week’s BMW Championship. That is, if he maintains his place high up the leaderboard. Jordan Spieth, Keith Mitchell and Sudarshan Yellamaraju also can play their way into another week of golf, while Brian Harman needs to keep climbing to make his impressive leap from 65th coming into Memphis.

Sam Burns shoots up leaderboard
He opened the third round with a birdie and never really slowed down. Sam Burns, No. 8 in the FedEx Cup standings entering the tournament, ran off three straight birdies around the bend, then sank two more on Nos. 15 and 16 to put up an 8-under day through 16 holes. The big day pulled him into a tie for the lead with Scottie Scheffler, who has stayed even through nine. One more bird would tie the course record; two would make history at TPC Southwind.
Tom Kim sinks 6 birdies in a row
Coming into Memphis No. 26 in the FedEx Cup standings, Tom Kim didn’t have to worry about making next week’s BMW Championship. His front-nine tear might extend that ease all the way to the Tour Championship. The 24-year-old from Korea needed only 10 putts on his way out, birdieing Nos. 2-7 with a seventh on the par-4 10th to get to 7 under on the day and 6 under for the tournament.
He’s five strokes behind leader Scottie Scheffler, who tied the course record with a 9-under 61 on Friday. Kim got as far as 8 under before alternating birdies and bogeys to finish his round at 7-under 63 with nine birds on the day.

Round 3 of the 2026 St. Jude Championship will broadcast nationally on Golf Channel starting at 1 p.m. before switching to CBS at 3 p.m. Featured group and hole streaming from PGA Tour Live is available on the ESPN app (with a subscription to the Select plan) starting at 7:45 a.m.
