Yorktown honors Sheridan Gorman and earns sentimental victory

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS – Overcome with emotion and fighting through tears to speak, Jessica Gorman was effusive in thanking the community for its support throughout an unfathomably difficult period for her family.

She then shifted seamlessly, lightening the mood by joking about her bedazzled denim jacket offering little protection from the evening chill. But, she explained, it was designed by her daughter, customized with glittery patches, and meant to be worn to Yorktown sporting events.

The infusion of levity in that speech and the round of hugs that followed, and simply her parents’ presence at a girls lacrosse game, Lily Diaz said, was a reminder of what the team loved most about Sheridan Gorman.

“What her parents said kind of symbolized what she was like,” Diaz said of her friend and former teammate. “She always had a positive attitude, no matter what, and she would always be thinking about others.”

Sheridan Gorman was shot and killed on March 19 while walking near the campus of Loyola University in Chicago, where the 18-year-old was a freshman.

Her relatives still are reeling, and former schoolmates still are stunned by the tragedy, but players said it was uplifting to see Sheridan’s family attend a game the lacrosse program held in her honor. Thomas and Jessica Gorman addressed the audience in a pregame ceremony, and Sheridan’s sister Madelon greeted the team.

“It’s a situation no one should have to go through, but her family is amazing and we admire them,” said Yorktown coach Heather Raniolo, who organized the memorial game. “It’s been difficult for all of us, but we’ve leaned on each other. We’re trying to live like Sheridan — being positive and selfless.”

Buoyed by that wave of emotion and fueled almost by a sense of duty, the Huskers followed up with a 16-11 victory, building an insurmountable lead and holding on to beat previously undefeated John Jay-Cross River.

“This game being for Sheridan,” Diaz said, “the whole team had a different kind of energy and hunger. Her spirit was with us.”

Turning point

Diaz intercepted a pass inside the 10 and initiated a fast break, racing the length of the field and flipping a pass to Sydney Sateriale, whose goal gave Yorktown a 2-0 lead with 6:43 left in the first quarter. There was a similar sequence three minutes later when Diaz forced another turnover and Ava Ryan eventually scored in transition, giving the Huskers a three-goal lead.

With an aggressive and opportunistic defense, and an offense that was remarkably cohesive in its ball movement and precise with its shot placement, Yorktown thoroughly dominated the first half and took a 12-2 lead to halftime.

“We knew that John Jay was going to be one of our toughest opponents this year, so this was a big win for us,” said Ryan, who scored a game-high six goals. “Our team is doing a great job of keeping our heads up and looking for each other. I got a lot of passes from Sydney, and us doing this well was a result of everyone sharing the ball.”

Yorktown won the Section 1 Class B championship last spring after rebounding from a slow start. This group, despite a roster filled with underclassmen, is well ahead of its pace from last season. The Huskers have overwhelmed most of their opponents thus far and the victory over John Jay was their third against a team with realistic title aspirations.

Player of the game

Diaz contributed in all facets and was a catalyst on both ends of the field. The midfielder had two goals and two assists, forced seven turnovers, recovered six groundballs and won six draw controls, including the 200th of her career.

“The draw-takers and the ones on the circle set me up for success, so I owe it to them,” the junior said of the milestone. “I think the turnovers and our fast start were a product of us being inspired, coming out fired up and wanting to win for Sheridan.”

Box score

Yorktown (6-0) — Ryan 6g, 1a, 4gb; Annie Cunneen 4g, 1a, 3DC; Sateriale 3g, 2a, 4DC; Gianna Boucher 1g, 2gb; Sam Conboy (two saves) and Julia Fitzsimons (three) combined at goalkeeper.

John Jay-Cross River (4-1) — Coco Inglis 5g; Fin Degl 3g, 2a, 8DC; Maye Viders 2g; Dillon Hall 1g; Riley McCaffrey made three saves.

They said it

“She was the team manager when I was in eighth grade and she was always looking out for everyone,” Ryan, a sophomore, said of Sheridan Gorman. “She used to drive me around if I needed to get somewhere, and she’d do things like that for the younger players. She was always super positive and I’ll never forget that.”

Yorktown High School will have a commemorative brick installed in the ground near the entrance of Charlie Murphy Athletic Field. Inscribed on it will be a heart with the message, “Live like Sheridan Gorman.”

“Every day when we walk down to the field for practice or a game,” Raniolo said, “we’ll pass it and we’ll think of her.”

Rye disappointed, not disheartened after Wilton rallies to win

RYE – This sequence was somewhat of a synopsis of the second half.

Lucy Wood gathered a loose ball and emerged from the scrum, ending a frenetic scramble in which it seemed possession changed 10 times in as many seconds, and the sophomore cleared it with an outlet pass that got Rye in transition.

Trailing by a goal in the waning minutes, that turnover breathed life into the Garnets with 1:03 remaining and, for a moment, gave them and their fans hope of an exciting script-flipping ending.

But, after a meticulous setup created for the offense a close-range attempt, the shot was deflected near the crease and recovered by the goalkeeper with 11 seconds left as visiting Wilton, Connecticut eked out a 7-6 win over Rye.

“We’re always focused on moving forward to what’s next,” senior Beau Whaling said on April 7, “but we do have to reflect on a game like this.”

It was an especially frustrating result for the Garnets not just because they allowed the Connecticut powerhouse to score five unanswered goals to close, wasting their dominant start, but because the team did so many of the difficult things well and couldn’t capitalize.

“This one hurt,” said coach Michelle Mason, whose team scored the first five goals. “We’re at home and have a good lead, but we had a tough day on the end of the field that’s usually a strength for us.”

Despite a rebuilt back line and a freshman goalie, Rye excelled defensively and made several key stops, giving its star-studded offense a chance to pull away early and, eventually, an opportunity to force overtime. Instead, the Warriors rallied to beat them for a second straight season, and by an identical score.

“They hate losing, so this will definitely be a motivator,” the coach said. “Sometimes, the best way to learn is from hitting your face on the ground and getting back up.”

Turning point

The Garnets “were prepared” for Wilton, Whaling said, after studying film and strategizing during the holiday week. They also were eager to avenge the overtime loss from a year ago.

It showed in the first quarter as Rye stifled them, offsetting an early edge in draw controls, while also moving the ball well and creating openings within the 8-meter arc. Annie Toulouse’s goal gave them a 5-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.

“They have great stick skills and their aggressiveness on the ride was something we had to adjust to,” said Wilton star Rose Bilella, a midfielder headed to Marquette. “We stayed composed, our defense kept us in it, and we figured a way to counter them and start scoring.”

The Warriors chipped away, drawing to within 5-2 at halftime, and allowed only Whaling’s goal on a bouncer in the third quarter. Their offense erupted in the fourth, aided by the defense, and Harper Pattillo tied it at 6 with 9:17 remaining following a turnover.

Bilella eventually scored the winner with 3:06 to go, capitalizing on a foul with a free-position alignment that gave her a clear path to the goal.

The Garnets’ best chance to answer came on the ensuing possession, after drawing their own free position with 2:12 left, but a high liner from 10 yards was stopped on Samantha McDonnell’s eighth save.

Box score

Rye (2-2) — Whaling 2g, 1 gb; Toulouse 1g, 1a; Blake Sasse 2g, 1CTO; Paloma Pepper 1g; Mia Howson 1a; Mary Ebeling 1a, 2DC, 1CTO, 1gb; Wood 3gb, 1CTO; Nemsick 2gb, 4DC; Coco Peters 3gb, 2CTO; Emma Pedone 1CTO; Peyton Leahy 2CTO, 2gb; Dylan Ehrlich seven saves and a groundball.

Wilton (1-0) — Bilella 2g; Pattillo 1g; Liza Fogelson 2g; Riley Malay 1g; Avery DeCore 1g.

Takeaways

Rye is a deep and talented squad that is expected to contend for a Section 1 championship, at least. With an eye toward those lofty goals, their schedule includes several non-league matchups against elite teams, meant to test and prepare them.

The Garnets traveled to Florida last week and took an 11-8 loss to American Heritage, a team ranked 15th in the nation. Still, that performance was encouraging against a team that good, Mason said.

Wilton is also formidable, and its roster features seven Div. I college commits, but the Garnets acknowledge this was a contest they should’ve won.

“We need to keep our poise on offense,” Whaling said. “We’ve been playing well, and we started fast, but we kind of lost that.”

The senior is a Duke commit who is among Rye’s cadre of offensive standouts. And that unit could receive a boost down the stretch as USC-bound midfielder Paige Tepedino nears a return from a torn ACL.

The variable entering this spring was a defense whose only returning starter was Clare Nemsick, but that group has done well. So, despite the disappointment, the Garnets’ trajectory hasn’t changed.

“We played really well defensively, our transition looked great, our ride was good,” Mason said. “We just had a hard time getting into a rhythm on offense. But we’ll get better from this, and we still have high expectations for ourselves.”
