Driver killed in Cayuga County tractor-trailer crash identified

Authorities have identified the driver killed last week in a tractor-trailer crash in Cayuga County in New York’s Finger Lakes region.

The fatal crash happened on State Route 34B in Scipio, just south of Fleming-Scipio Town Line Road, shortly after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, July 2, according to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck.

Investigators said a southbound Freightliner tractor-trailer carrying liquid manure traveled off the shoulder of the road and overturned after the driver attempted to return to the roadway.

Scipio is located in Cayuga County between Cayuga Lake and Owasco Lake in the Finger Lakes region.

Driver killed in crash identified

Deputies on Tuesday, July 7, identified the driver as Dewite J. Curtis, 46, of Lisle in Broome County.

Curtis was the only person inside the tractor-trailer and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigation continues

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.
