Boat operator charged after crash seriously injures 2 in Sag Harbor Bay

Two people were seriously injured after a boat crashed into a stone jetty in Sag Harbor Bay on eastern Long Island before the operator allegedly fled the scene Sunday night.

Just after 10 p.m. Sunday, July 5, a 35-foot cabin cruiser was entering Sag Harbor Bay in Suffolk County when it struck a stone jetty, causing significant damage to the vessel, according to New York State Police.

Troopers responded early Monday after being notified by the Sag Harbor Village Police Department.

Boat operator allegedly fled after crash

Eight people were aboard the boat when it crashed. Two passengers suffered serious injuries, state police said.

After docking the damaged vessel, the operator allegedly left the scene while emergency responders treated the injured passengers, according to investigators.

The two passengers were taken to an area hospital with injuries that included broken ribs, a fractured leg and a fractured vertebra, troopers said.

Southampton man charged

State police later identified the operator as Peter Mangiameli, 57, of Southampton.

In addition, Mangiameli was charged with reckless operation of a vessel, a violation, along with multiple violations of New York Navigation Law, according to state police.

Investigation continues

The investigation remains ongoing.
