$25M in road improvements coming to Route 9 in Westchester. See where

A total of $25 million in federal funding will go towards safety improvements on stretches of U.S. Route 9 in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer announced.

The funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program, which provides competitive grants for transportation infrastructure projects with local and regional significance. Funding for the program was expanded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure and Jobs Law.

The project will include the installation of two new traffic signals, the construction of up to a 0.75-mile shared-use path, reconstruct about 1.5 miles of U.S. Route 9 to include turning four signalized intersections into roundabouts, the enhancement of sidewalks and pedestrian crossings and the optimization of bus stop locations.

Where will the roundabouts be on Route 9 in Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow?

According to the New York State Department of Transportation’s Route 9 Corridor plans, the four roundabouts funded through the project are proposed at the intersections of Route 9 and Pierson Avenue/Gordon Avenue, Route 9 and Pocantico Street, Route 9 and Bedford Road/New Broadway and Route 9 and Beekman Road.

Route 9 construction timeline details

While the funding announcement marks a major milestone, Tarrytown Mayor Karen Brown said residents should not expect construction to begin immediately. The villages of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow have had to work closely with the state on creating the proposal for the project over several years, Brown noted.

“We don’t see anything being done in [20]26,” Brown added. “There is a lot of time before these changes will be on the road.”

Brown said only about 30% of the project’s process has been completed, with substantial planning still required before construction can get underway.

Despite the lengthy timeline, she said the project is intended to improve safety while addressing longstanding traffic congestion along the Route 9 corridor.

“The roads are so congested that we have to figure out how we can make people more mobile,” Brown said. “It’s going to help our current residents to have a safer environment to walk and bike, and it will also allow us to grow without adding to the congestion that we already have.”

Brown encouraged residents to stay informed by signing up for the Village of Tarrytown newsletter and to continue sharing their opinions and concerns as planning progresses.

Schumer, Gillibrand call project a win for Westchester

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law we passed is paving the way for safer roads and more jobs in Westchester County,” Senate Minority Leader Schumer said in a statement.

Gillibrand addressed the funding’s anticipated impact on transportation infrastructure in Westchester County.

“Well-maintained infrastructure is critical to increase safety, improve the flow of traffic, and enhance mobility,” Gillibrand said in a statement. “This project is a win for Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, and all of Westchester.”
