Akiyo set to open in June, all-you-can-eat sushi in Johnson City

A new all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant is opening in Johnson City.

Akiyo is set to open in June at the former Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill building on Reynolds Road, which has sat vacant since Mooney’s closed in August 2025.

Akiyo owner Feng Lin, 28, said the restaurant will bring something new to the Johnson City area, and he is eager to hear customer feedback.

A Vestal High School graduate, Feng lived in Long Island before moving to Vestal for four years of high school. After graduation, Feng moved back to Long Island and was a partner in a Japanese restaurant there.

Feng eventually sold his share of the Long Island restaurant and decided to move back to Vestal to open up his own. He purchased the property at 214 Reynolds Road in October 2025 and has since worked alongside his family to open Akiyo.

Cleanliness of the restaurant, being open to customer feedback, and ensuring the food is fresh are the three most important aspects to Feng. He encourages customers to share their experience at Akiyo, and said he “prefers to change,” depending on what the customers like and what they don’t like.

Feng plans on updating the menu regularly and eventually upgrading the inside of the restaurant to ensure he keeps up with the changing times. He said he hopes customers come to him personally with any concerns, as he will always be in the restaurant.

Here’s what to know about Akiyo, and when it will open.

What will Akiyo offer at the Johnson City restaurant?

Akiyo will be an all-you-can-eat restaurant. Unlike a buffet, customers will receive a sheet of paper and check the boxes of the items they want.

Items on the menu include salad and soup, small bites, sushi, hibachi, udon and dessert.

There are some limitations regarding the menu, including a 120-minute time limit, no substitutions or modifications to menu items, and a $12.99 per pound charge for food not consumed.

Meal times and menu prices include:

When will Akiyo open in Johnson City?

The soft opening will be held from 3-9:30 p.m. on June 7.

The restaurant will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily after that.
