A 16-year-old girl was seriously injured Friday morning after she was attacked with a machete at a Rochester residence, police said.
Teen attacked with machete
Officers responded to a home on St. Paul Street near Avenue A around 7:30 a.m. Friday, July 17, after receiving a report that a man was using a machete to cut another person, Rochester Police Department Capt. Greg Bello said.
When officers arrived, they found the 16-year-old girl lying on the kitchen floor with severe lacerations across multiple areas of her body. Officers immediately applied two life-saving tourniquets, Bello said.
Injuries described as life-altering
The girl was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery, police said.
Her injuries were described as “life-altering” but are no longer considered life-threatening because of the quick actions of first responders, Bello said.
Police say attack was not random
A man in his 40s was detained following the incident. Bello said the attack “did not appear to be a random act.”
Police said the man and the girl knew each other before the encounter, but officials did not disclose the nature of their relationship or whether they are related.
Additional details were not immediately released.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 911.
