Vote for the Register male Athlete of the Week for April 26-May 2

The week of April 26-May 2 saw male spring sports teams and athletes from the Des Moines metro area turn in some impressive performances.

Area boys track and field teams followed up the Drake Relays with competitive meets as they strive to continue to cut times before state. The 2026 Iowa high school state track and field championships take place from May 21-23 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

It was an exciting week of boys golf, tennis and soccer. Athletes from these sports are headed into their final stretch run of the regular season.

Here are the Des Moines Register’s male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of April 26-May 2. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Stephano Terekeza, Des Moines Hoover

Terekeza recorded a hat-trick during Class 3A No. 3 Des Moines Hoover’s 6-0 victory over Des Moines East in high school boys soccer on April 28 in Des Moines.

Terekeza netted three goals for the Huskies in helping them cruise to their eighth victory of the season. He converted all three of his shots on goal.

Myles Matzen, North Polk

Matzen tied for the top individual score at the Winterset Invitational boys golf meet on May 1 at the Lakeview Country Club in Winterset.

The North Polk freshman carded a 3-over par round of 73 over 18 holes to tie Gilbert’s Johathan Bouska for the top individual score at the meet. Matzen helped North Polk shoot a 303 as a team to edge Newton by two strokes for the team title.

Garrett Weichers, Ankeny

Weichers had a a victory in the No. 1 singles match during the Ankeny boys tennis team’s 9-2 loss to Dowling Catholic on April 30 at West Des Moines.

Weichers defeated Dowling’s Landon Cody in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-0.

Keaton Mennen, Van Meter

Mennen recorded the fourth-best boys shot put toss in the state during the Madrid Invitational on April 28 at Madrid.

Mennen won the event at Madrid with a toss of 60 feet, 8.5 inches.

Ramadhani Songwa, Des Moines North

Songwa had a huge night on offense for the Des Moines North boys soccer team in helping the Polar Bears roll to a 10-0 victory over Fort Dodge on April 28 in Des Moines.

Songwa had a hand in six goals for North. Songwa put four goals into the net himself, and he chipped in two assists.
