After thousands of Iowa City residents turned out for a nationwide day of protest in June against President Donald Trump’s administration, another protest, part of a national movement, is slated for Iowa City in October.
Protests are planned to take place on Oct. 18, with 1,500 events throughout the United States already established, according to advocacy group Fight for a Union.
The No Kings demonstration in Iowa City is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, along Iowa Avenue near the Pentacrest. A full lineup of speakers has not yet been released.
The event will bring the community together for a powerful rally “demanding transparency, justice, and accountability,” according to a news release from Indivisible, the event organizer.
What are the No Kings protests?
Indivisible, a nonprofit coalition of political action groups, is organizing the No Kings protests. Indivisible said it is organizing “to reject corrupt, authoritarian politics.”
“The president thinks his rule is absolute. But in America, we don’t have kings, and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty,” Indivisible said in a news release.
Organizers have stated that the protests are intended to be nonviolent and have discouraged bringing any kind of weapon.
In a news release from organizers, the national protest is calling on “Congress and the Department of Justice to unseal the Epstein files, end elite immunity, and honor the dignity of survivors.”
